Middlesbrough

A North Yorkshire town that is post-industrial, Middlesbrough, founded in 1830, (/ MID-əlz-brə/ˈmɪdəlzbrə) is on the River Tees south bank in northeast England. A presence in the town is Middlesbrough-based Teesside University.

The town centre, which consists of shopping centres, the largest of which is the C. Centre, serves Middlesbrough. Middlesbrough's sole Grade I listed building, it is built by Sir William Hustler. In January 2007, the Middlesbrough Institute of Modern Art opened.

In the late 19th century, Middlesbrough Ironopolis FC, league club, was based in the town, but folded within a few years. Known for a time as Middlesbrough Tigers, Teesside Tigers, and The Teessiders; The Middlesbrough Bears the post-war team at all levels operated.

In Middlesbrough and Hartlepool is the Northern School of Art, which opened in 1960. Recognised as a (BUASD) sub-division area that is built-up of Teesside by the National Statistics Office is Middlesbrough. Via a branch that extended to an area just north of the Middlesbrough railway station, the port was linked to the S&DR on 27 December 1830.

Middlesbrough became part of the County Borough of Teesside in 1968, and, until the abolition in 1996, it became part of a non-metropolitan in 1974 when Middlesbrough became a unitary authority. Middlesbrough is in the country's drier part, receiving (22.6 inches) 574 millimetres of rain on average a year, being sheltered by the Pennines and Lake District to the west and to the south the Cleveland Hills from winds prevailing south-westerly.

At the eastern edge of the centre is located Middlesbrough Leisure Park. A subdivision of Church of England Diocese of York in the Province of York, Middlesbrough is a deanery of the Archdeaconry of Cleveland.
